My Nourishment

Nutrition for the Soul...

Several years ago I was extremely puzzled
by some Scripture verses in John Chapter Six,
especially verse 51 where Jesus says:
"I am the living bread that came down from heaven.
If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.
This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world."

I was not in the habit of embracing Lent,
but this seemed like a good time to start.
I decided that I would not eat any bread
during the lenten season,
and would ask God to teach me
what it meant to eat the Bread of Life.

Sometimes I think I am such a slow learner,
but I'm glad that God is a patient teacher!
I felt like the disciples who said in verse 60,
"This is a hard teaching..."
I was glad that I wasn't the only one slow to understand.

Then one day as I read John 1:14,
the light started breaking through to me.
"The Word became flesh...," it said.
Jesus embodied  the Word.
To devour or consume the Word of God
by studying it and meditating on it,
was to eat the Bread of Life,
which brought nourishment and life to my soul.

Okay, this was kind of deep,

You GOT it.Papa used to sort of stare into space with his Bible in his hand. I asked him what he was doing and he said "Ruminating". In simple terms that means to "chew the cud".He was digesting the word of God. Chewing it slowly to get all the "flavor" and "sublety" of the Word. I am so grateful to have had that example. I love Bible meditation!

I really like this idea for Lent. Giving up earthly bread to feast on the Bread of Life.

I think I will follow your lead.

Not to late to start... we all have our own time. Have a great day.

So lovely of a thought...we must be careful what we chew though...right? Sometimes we need to linger a bit longer over things...

I have a good friend who is giving up bread for Lent. I just assumed that it was because she loves bread and felt like it was something she could offer as her "sacrifice"..but now, knowing her, I'm guessing she did it so that she could be fed the bread of life instead, that she could be nourished by God's word. What a great idea you both have.

Another great post from you!

You're right. This is "deep", but very very important. I guess bread may be my favorite food. I love that Jesus is the bread of life and the living water. Thank you for this post and this reminder.
Blessings,
Charlotte

This post really touched me. I am struggling with so many things right now. I feel like the slowest learner.

Thank you for this reminder of hope and patience.

And thank you for linking to Alphabe-Thursday's letter "N".
